'Tis the Season for Giving

The Norseman community recognizes the importance of teaching our students the value of giving to those in need. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for access to food has never been greater. According to the Who's Hungry Report 2020, in July and August 2020, food bank visits in Toronto increased by 51% compared to the year before. 43% of adult food bank clients reported going hungry at least once a week, while 22% said the children in their care went hungry at least once a week. Food bank clients are concentrated in areas of Toronto that are more racialized and face higher rates of poverty, including in Etobicoke.

What can we do to help reduce food insecurity among our most vulnerable neighbours? In addition to educating ourselves, the Norseman School Advisory Council (SAC) has organized a Give-a-thon, challenging each student to complete at least one hour of giving by December 20, 2020. For example, younger students might spend one hour making cards for elderly relatives. Older students could clean up litter in a nearby park. Students may wish to challenge their friends when choosing an activity. We encourage our students to be creative and safe. Photos of our students engaged in a Give-a-thon activity can be tweeted to @NjmsCouncil using #NorsemanSACGiveathon.

We hope you will consider sponsoring our students' efforts to make a difference in our community by giving to the Daily Bread Food Bank. Every little bit counts. Tax receipts will be issued by the Daily Bread Food Bank for donations of $10 or more. Thank you in advance for your generous support.
