The Covid 19 virus crisis is causing huge strain on our food banks due to increased demand. Please help us help out those among us who are most in need at this time. Unprecedented reasons food banks are low right now include the following:

  • Social distancing and quarantining are decreasing drop off donations and the number of volunteers
  • General anxiety along with food hoarding
  • Closure of restaurants and other food related businesses - this means the usual donations of perishable food to various programs and organizations is causing additional demand from food banks
As part of their action plan, Health Canada has issued a statement encouraging citizens to set aside a week's supply of food, medicine and other household supplies. Unfortunately, this is not an option for our clients, who (on average) after paying for housing have $7.83 per day to cover all other essential costs - including food. Our clients rely on our provision - and that of 170 partner food programs across the city which we serve - to fill in the gap between what they can afford to buy and what is needed for their families.

With the sharp end to community food drives and public events, we find ourselves needing to purchase shelf-stable foods so that we can continue to provide to our clients during these unprecedented times. At the same time, demand is rising sharply, up 12% last week at our New Toronto Street location, a further 20% jump from the week prior.

Since the pandemic hit the city three weeks ago, Daily Bread’s onsite food bank alone has experienced a 53% increase in clients. Just at a time when food and volunteer supply has been disrupted. The need across the city will only continue to grow – and exponentially – as the financial impacts of COVID-19 are realized.
