Kathleen's birthday fundraiser for Daily Bread
Wow, half a century goes by in a blink....
I'm making the transition from my "fabulous 40's" to "how-the-f*@k-can-I-be-50?" this month.
I have to admit that I'm a little bewildered at where the half-century has gone - I still often catch myself thinking about what I want to be when I grow up. At least I have the next half-century to figure it out.
I decided not to have a party or make a fuss about my birthday this year. Fritz is spiriting me away for a quiet weekend in Picton and the kids will probably make me a card, and maybe breakfast in bed... that's plenty. I feel so lucky.
I don't take for granted that I have loving people in my life, a roof over my head, healthy food to eat, an education, and a life free of violence. Not everybody lives like this, and it's not because I am any more deserving... just lucky.
So this year I've decided to ask my friends and family who might be thinking of buying me a birthday present to instead make a donation to a charity I truly believe in, the Daily Bread Food Bank.
I have volunteered at Daily Bread as a food support worker in the past and I know how fundamentally important their services are to so many of our neighbours in Toronto. They can make the difference between going to school or not, between leaving an abusive relationship or not, between buying your medications or not, between feeding your kids or not.
So please, if you were thinking of buying me something, don't spend the money on a bottle of wine (hey, I know my reputation!). Please give it to Daily Bread. Every dollar you give provides a meal to a neighbour in need, and helps Daily Bread advocate for change to lift families out of poverty. You will also get a tax receipt for a donation of $10 or more.
Thank you! I'm really looking forward to sharing my next half-century with all of you.
With so much love,
Kathleen
